Specialist search for Technical Leadership hiring

Specialist search for Technical Leadership roles in robotics across the USA. We hire Heads of Software, Heads of Autonomy, VP Engineering, CTO, and founding technical leaders for robotics companies that need technical authority at the top.

What this market is

Technical leadership in robotics covers the layer between engineering and organisational strategy — Heads of Software or Autonomy, VP Engineering, Staff and Principal engineers with broad technical ownership, CTO roles, and founding technical hires who set the engineering culture from the beginning. These are high-trust, high-consequence hires where the quality of judgement matters as much as technical depth.

In robotics specifically, technical leadership requires credibility across a stack that spans hardware, firmware, systems software, and application-level engineering. Leaders who have only led software-centric teams at non-robotics companies frequently underestimate the complexity of the hardware-software interface in deployed robotic systems — and lose credibility with their teams quickly as a result.

Roles we hire for

  • Head of Software / Head of Autonomy
  • VP Engineering
  • CTO
  • Staff / Principal Engineer (technical track)
  • Engineering Director
  • Founding Technical Hire

Hiring challenges

The pool of technical leaders with genuine robotics experience at the level companies need is very small. The best people are typically deeply embedded in well-funded programs. They are not on the market, not visible through standard channels, and not interested in inbound approaches that do not demonstrate real understanding of the robotics engineering landscape.

Assessment is also harder than for individual contributor roles. Technical leadership candidates need to be evaluated against criteria that include system design judgement, team calibration, communication under ambiguity, and the ability to make consequential technical decisions with incomplete information. A strong IC background does not automatically predict strong leadership performance.

Where talent sits

Distributed across the major hubs, with the highest concentration of experienced robotics engineering leaders in San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, and Pittsburgh. Many of the most capable technical leaders in this market have been through one or two formative robotics programs — Waymo, Boston Dynamics, CMU spinouts, Aurora, Agility Robotics — and have since moved into subsequent leadership roles.
