A perception engineer builds the systems that let a robot understand what is around it. They make robots see, hear, and sense the physical world. Without perception, a robot is blind: it cannot detect obstacles, identify objects, or navigate safely.
In practical terms, a perception engineer writes the software that processes data from cameras, LiDAR sensors, radar, and other devices, then turns that raw data into useful information the robot can act on. That information might be "there is a person 3 meters ahead" or "this shelf is empty" or "the road ahead is clear." The role sits in the perception and vision discipline, one of the most in-demand areas in modern robotics.
Core responsibilities
- Builds and maintains the 3D object detection pipeline that lets the robot distinguish a person from a shelf from a forklift at 30 frames per second.
- Calibrates and maintains sensor systems (cameras, LiDAR, radar, IMUs) so data from multiple sensors can be combined accurately.
- Designs and trains neural network models for object detection, classification, and segmentation, then optimizes them to run in real time on the robot's hardware.
- Builds sensor fusion pipelines that combine data from multiple sensor types to produce a single coherent understanding of the environment.
- Debugs perception failures in field-deployed systems: figuring out why the robot misidentified an object or failed to detect an obstacle in specific conditions.
- Measures and reports perception system performance using metrics that matter for the downstream consumer (planning, controls), not just academic benchmarks.
- Works with the data team to identify gaps in training data and design collection strategies that address real-world edge cases.
- Reviews and evaluates new perception approaches from research, deciding what is worth integrating into production systems.
Technical skills and tools
The primary languages are C++ for production code that runs on the robot and Python for prototyping, training, and data analysis. Most perception engineers are fluent in both.
Key frameworks and libraries include PyTorch or TensorFlow for model training, TensorRT or ONNX Runtime for inference optimization, OpenCV for image processing, PCL (Point Cloud Library) for LiDAR data, and ROS2 for integration with the rest of the robotics stack.
Perception engineers work with physical sensors: monocular and stereo cameras, spinning and solid-state LiDAR, millimeter-wave radar, and inertial measurement units (IMUs). Understanding sensor physics, noise characteristics, and calibration is essential.
Simulation tools like NVIDIA Isaac Sim, CARLA, or custom simulators are used for testing and generating synthetic training data. Understanding the gap between simulated and real sensor data is a critical skill.
How this role fits into the team
Perception engineers sit between the hardware team (who design and maintain the physical sensors) and the autonomy and controls teams (who consume perception outputs to make decisions and move the robot).
They hand off structured data to the planning and autonomy team: "here is a list of detected objects, their positions, velocities, and classifications." The quality and reliability of this handoff determines how well the entire downstream system performs.
In larger teams, perception is often split into sub-specialties: camera perception, LiDAR perception, sensor fusion, and tracking. In smaller startups, one engineer may own the entire perception stack.
Junior vs Senior vs Staff
A junior perception engineer works on well-defined tasks within an existing pipeline: training a detection model, running evaluation experiments, fixing bugs in data processing code. They are learning the domain and building intuition about sensor data.
A senior perception engineer owns a major component of the perception stack. They make architectural decisions, design evaluation frameworks, debug complex field failures, and mentor junior engineers. They are trusted to make tradeoff decisions without close supervision.
A staff perception engineer shapes the direction of the entire perception system. They define the multi-year technical roadmap, make build-vs-buy decisions, set the evaluation methodology, and influence hiring standards. They often work across team boundaries, aligning perception strategy with autonomy and product goals.

Career path
Most perception engineers enter the field from a master's or PhD in computer vision, machine learning, or robotics. Some transition from adjacent roles in automotive ADAS, AR/VR, or medical imaging. A smaller number come from strong software engineering backgrounds and build perception expertise on the job.
The career trajectory typically follows: junior engineer, senior engineer, staff/principal engineer, then either technical leadership (Head of Perception, Director of Perception) or an individual contributor principal track. Some perception engineers become CTOs at early-stage robotics startups where the core technical challenge is perception.
