What Does an Autonomy Engineer Do?

An autonomy engineer builds the decision-making and planning systems that allow a robot to act on its own. They determine what the robot should do next, where it should go, and how to get there safely. Without autonomy, a robot can see the world (perception) and move its body (controls) but cannot decide what to do.
In practical terms, an autonomy engineer writes the software that takes in information about the robot's surroundings, reasons about what actions are possible, and produces a plan the robot can execute. That plan might be "navigate around this obstacle and proceed to aisle 4" or "wait for this person to pass, then continue forward" or "abort the current task and return to the charging station." The role sits at the center of the autonomy and decision-making discipline, where the robot's intelligence lives.
Core responsibilities
- Designs and implements behavior planners and state machines that govern what the robot does in every situation it might encounter, from routine operations to rare edge cases.
- Implements motion planning algorithms that generate collision-free paths through complex environments, balancing speed, safety, and smoothness.
- Builds prediction models for dynamic obstacles: estimating where people, vehicles, and other moving objects will be in the next few seconds so the robot can plan around them.
- Defines safety fallback behaviors that activate when normal operation fails. These are the last line of defense: emergency stops, safe-state maneuvers, and graceful degradation strategies.
- Owns the simulation testing framework that validates autonomy behavior across thousands of scenarios before code reaches a real robot. This includes designing test scenarios, defining pass/fail criteria, and maintaining simulation fidelity.
- Tunes system behavior for field deployment, adjusting planning parameters and decision thresholds based on real-world performance data from deployed robots.
- Works with regulatory and safety teams to ensure the autonomy system meets the requirements for the operating environment, whether that is a warehouse, a public sidewalk, or a hospital corridor.
- Integrates perception outputs into the planning pipeline, defining the interface between what the robot sees and what the robot decides to do.
Technical skills and tools
C++ is the primary language for production autonomy code because planning algorithms must run within strict time budgets on the robot. Python is used for prototyping, data analysis, and simulation scripting. Most autonomy engineers are strong in both.
Key libraries and frameworks include behavior tree frameworks (BehaviorTree.CPP, py_trees) for structuring robot decision-making, motion planning libraries (OMPL, Drake, MoveIt) for generating collision-free trajectories, and ROS2 for communication with the rest of the robotics stack.
Simulation is central to autonomy work. Engineers use NVIDIA Isaac Sim, CARLA, Gazebo, or custom internal simulators to test planning behavior across thousands of scenarios. Understanding how to design meaningful test scenarios and measure autonomy performance in simulation is a core skill.
Autonomy engineers need a solid foundation in graph search algorithms (A*, D*), sampling-based planning (RRT, PRM), optimization-based planning (trajectory optimization, model predictive control), and probabilistic reasoning. They also need to understand the mathematical models that underpin prediction and decision-making under uncertainty.
How this role fits into the team
Autonomy engineers sit at the center of the robotics stack. They consume structured data from the perception team ("here are the detected objects and their positions") and produce commands for the controls team ("move along this trajectory at this speed"). They also work closely with SLAM engineers who provide the map and localization data the planner depends on.
They work closely with safety engineers on fallback behaviors and failure handling. When the perception system loses confidence or the controls system reports a fault, it is the autonomy layer that decides what to do: slow down, stop, reroute, or call for help. A junior autonomy engineer implements specific planner components within an existing architecture: adding a new behavior to the state machine, tuning planner parameters, writing simulation test cases, or fixing bugs in the planning pipeline. They are building intuition about how planning decisions play out in the physical world.
A senior autonomy engineer owns a major subsystem, such as the behavior layer or the motion planner. They make architectural decisions about how the planner should be structured, design the evaluation methodology for measuring autonomy performance, debug complex field failures where the robot made a poor decision, and mentor junior engineers. They are trusted to make tradeoff decisions between safety, performance, and capability without close supervision.
A staff autonomy engineer defines the full autonomy architecture and safety strategy. They set the multi-year technical roadmap for autonomy, make decisions about which planning approaches to invest in, define the safety case for the entire system, and influence hiring standards. They work across team boundaries, ensuring the autonomy strategy aligns with perception capabilities, controls constraints, and product requirements.
Salary ranges reflect these levels. In the San Francisco Bay Area, junior autonomy engineers earn $130-160k, seniors earn $200-260k, and staff-level engineers earn $250-300k base salary plus equity. Most autonomy engineers enter the field from a PhD in robotics, computer science, or aerospace engineering, with research in motion planning, decision-making under uncertainty, or multi-agent systems. A significant number transition from the autonomous vehicle industry, where they worked on self-driving car planning stacks. Some come from adjacent fields like game AI, operations research, or control theory.
The career trajectory typically follows: junior engineer, senior engineer, staff/principal engineer, then either technical leadership (Head of Autonomy, VP of Autonomy) or a principal individual contributor track. Because autonomy is the discipline most directly responsible for what the robot actually does, autonomy leaders often become CTOs or VP Engineering at robotics companies. They are the people who can answer the question "why did the robot do that?" at every level, from the code to the business logic.
The strongest concentration of autonomy engineering talent in the US is in the San Francisco Bay Area and Pittsburgh, driven by the autonomous vehicle industry. Boston has a growing concentration, particularly in warehouse robotics and legged locomotion.
